World Cancer Day: VBHC Can Help Close the Cancer Care Gap
Every year, 4 February marks World Cancer Day. This year, the priority is on closing the care gap for cancer.
It is estimated that 1 in 8 women worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer, with over 2.3 million new cases diagnosed in 2022, making it the second most commonly occuring cancer in the world. When presented early, it will almost always require surgical intervention. Yet, 82% of countries lack cancer surgeons. In LMICs specifically, there is a 383% gap in surgical capacity.
Value-based healthcare (VBHC) can play a critical role in addressing the gap in cancer care, by using available resources to achieve better health outcomes and experiences. VBHC is about investing in more of what brings value to the patient through shared decision-making and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).
